Ben Winterburn

Position:
Midfielder
Date of birth:
4th September 2004
Nationality:
English

Born in Locks Heath in Fareham, Winterburn played for Locks Heath Lions and Sarisbury Sparks as a youngster before having trials with Southampton.

He joined the Cherries at the under-11 age group, initially signing as a left-winger before being moved to central midfield as he turned out for the under-13s.

Obsessed with football from a young age, Winterburn grew up playing with his two brothers and his Manchester United supporting Dad and lists Wayne Rooney as his first hero.

The midfielder has moved away from home for the first time to be in digs in the local area while playing for the Cherries and lives with teammate Archie Harris.

He made his first appearance for the under-18s in the dramatic 1-1 draw with Millwall in December 2020. A member of the under-16s squad at the time, Winterburn came on as a second-half substitute and set up goalkeeper-turned-striker Josh Clarke for a last-gasp equaliser.

Winterburn's first start came the following month as the Cherries fell to a 3-1 defeat to Oxford United and he soon became a regular for Alan Connell's team.

He lists his versatility as one of his biggest assets and can turn out at right-back or centre-back if needed.

He made his development squad debut aged just 17 in the Premier League Cup game with West Brom in December 2021, grabbing an assist in a 4-0 win in-front of supporters at Vitality Stadium.

His cousin Holly Winterburn plays basketball for England having attended Oregon University.
