AFC Bournemouth are pleased to announce that Dan Carroll has been appointed in the under-18s lead coach role, with Andrew Surman returning to the club as his assistant.

The appointment sees Carroll step up on an interim basis until the end of the season from his position coaching the Cherries’ under-16s.

Having worked his way through the academy’s age groups, the UEFA A licensed coach previously held the position of youth development phase lead coach.

Carroll replaces Alan Connell as the under-18s lead coach following his progression to coaching the development squad.

Surman returns to the club to be part of the under-18s coaching team following a seven-year spell as a Cherries player having also spent time on loan at Vitality Stadium.

The now-36-year-old coach was a key part of the Bournemouth side which achieved the club’s first-ever promotion to the Premier League during the 2014/15 season.

Surman remained with Bournemouth for the duration of the Cherries’ five-year stint in the top flight before departing and joining MK Dons in 2020.

Leaving Vitality Stadium with 225 Bournemouth appearances under his belt, the midfielder scored 11 goals and assisted 20.

On the appointments, academy manager Sam Gisborne told afcb.co.uk: “We were really pleased for Shaun Cooper and Tommy Elphick stepping up to the first team.

“Their progression allowed us to make some changes to the rest of the academy coaching department structure.

“Alan Connell and James Lowy are now with our development squad, and we have been able to move Dan Carroll into the under-18s lead coach role.”

He continued on Carroll and Surman: “Dan has worked right the way through our academy, from our under-9s to most recently being with our under-16s.

“Dan’s work ethic and commitment to the academy has been superb and it makes complete sense to give him an opportunity to work with the as under-18s until the end of the season

“It’s great to have Andrew on board, too. He’s new to coaching but this role will be perfect for him as he will work very closely with people who have been with the academy a long time in Bruce Suraci, Ben Bradley and Dawn Roach.”

The reshuffle in academy coaching staff also sees Tom Prodomo installed as a youth development coach alongside Warren Cummings.

Gisborne said: "Warren is a great asset to our coaching team and the club, he will continue to focus on the under-13 and under-14s.

"Tom will predominantly be working with the under-15s and under-16s groups.

“Tom, who grew up in Bournemouth, has worked with Mark Molesley at Weymouth, Southend and Aldershot.

“Tom will be a great addition to the under-15s and 16s, as he prepares them for being scholars with the football club.”
