Match gallery: Cherries lose out to Spurs

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth brought down the curtain on an eventful year with an entertaining 3-1 defeat against Premier League counterparts Tottenham Hotspur.

The Cherries were bidding to extend to eight games their unbeaten run in the top flight and score multiple goals in eight consecutive league games for only the third time in their history.

And but for some heroic defending from the hosts, Andoni Iraola’s team may well have achieved both objectives at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Although Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring in the ninth minute, the Cherries were thwarted by a series of blocks, tackles, interceptions and saves from Guglielmo Vicario.

Goals from Son Heung-min and Richarlison towards the end of the second half effectively put the points out of the reach of the Cherries with ten minutes remaining.

Alex Scott’s maiden goal in the Premier League, which came six minutes from time, gave Iraola’s team a glimmer of hope, the playmaker also having an effort ruled out for offside in added time.

Despite racking up 24 shots and 13 corners, the Cherries left North London empty handed but will start 2024 in positive fashion following another excellent display.
