Howe reflects on Boro win

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has spoken of his delight following the Cherries' 3-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Young defender Jack Simpson opened the scoring just after the break, before Marcus Tavernier levelled for the visitors. It was then up to a Callum Wilson penalty to put the Cherries ahead, before Benik Afobe sealed the win with a third.

Here's what the manager had to say following the win.

On the performance…

I was really pleased with the players today, I thought it was a tough game. Middlesbrough have a team full of experienced players that did well for them in the Premier League last season.

Even though they’d made changes, they’re always a tough nut to crack. We found them difficult to break down, but in the end we scored some deserved goals and overall were worthy winners.

On boosting confidence…

I think mentally were in a better place now. We showed that against Stoke after playing the game out in a good manner. That’s boosted confidence levels.

Tonight, yes we were pegged back but we were able to go again and the substitutes made a difference.

I think winning is the best thing for any football team to rediscover its full potential and I think we’re in that place now. We built momentum slowly as we had a disappointing start to the season, but the team is in a better place now.

On Simpson’s debut…

Take the goal aside, which was a nice moment for him, I thought his overall performance was very good. He’s very composed on the ball – that’s one of the first things that struck me about him as a player.

He hasn’t been a defender for that long, as we’ve converted him from a midfielder so it’s been a gradual process. We’re delighted with how he’s progressing, he’s got a good mentality and he wasn’t fazed tonight. I think that’s a really compliment to him at this stage in his career.

I think he did very well and he doesn’t look out of place with the company that he’s playing in.

On Wilson’s return…

I’m really pleased with Callum because it’s a tough ask to get thrusted back into action.

He’s had the development games that we feel he needed, but he’s the football he’s playing now is a huge step up in level compared to what he had been doing.

Physically, he looked really good. He didn’t look tired towards the end of the game, made some great trademark runs and took his penalty very well. Overall, it was a great night for him.

On reaching the quarter-finals…

We’re really pleased. There are eight teams left and we have a chance to progress. I think we’ve only been in this situation twice as a football club before so we want to go to fresh ground.

Who knows, when you get to the latter stages of a competition anything can happen and that’s very much our mentality.
