Rodrigo Riquelme threatened with two shots before Southampton took the lead through Moussa Djenepo's low finish, Nathan Redmond scoring a second on the stroke of half time.
After the Cherries had opened the second period brightly, Che Adams had an effort ruled out for offside, though Redmond soon netted again to make it three and settle the tie.
