Head of community Steve Cuss updates afcb.co.uk on the latest happenings in and around the local area.

Since the last article, our coaches have returned from the Kick4Life project in South Africa, and we are now making our preparations for our trip to Australia. In April, myself and five coaching staff will be travelling to Brisbane to host a coaching workshop for players from St Joseph’s College - Gregory Terrace.

We work in partnership with the Australian school every year, which sees a group of students travel to England for a football tour or we travel to them to host various coaching sessions for their players. This is something that we are very much looking forward to again this year.

Last weekend, we supported Level Playing Field during our match-day activities, and we were delighted to welcome a selection of 20 young players, senior players and volunteers from our Ability Counts programme to the first team match against Newcastle. Some of these players were flagbearers and took part in the half penalty competition against the Newcastle fans at half-time.

The following day the Ability Counts teams were in Hampshire League action, where several players made their AFC Bournemouth debuts, and we picked up 12 wins across our five different times, which is another excellent weekend of results. We look forward to supporting the Ability Counts Senior teams with their Hampshire League fixtures this weekend.

Finally, last week our Powerchair training session was joined by six players from AFC Bournemouth’s youth team. The players came along to try out Powerchair football, they learnt he basics of manoeuvring the chairs and dribbling the ball with the chair’s metal bumper, before playing a small-sided game to finish. We’re enjoying a really successful first season with the Powerchair teams, and it is brilliant for us that we are able to offer this opportunity for everyone to play. Following this event, the National team went on to play their next round fixtures, where they won three games and drew the forth, so another excellent week for them.

Expansion of Mudeford Wood PL Kicks Session

Due to the increasing popularity of the weekly free football sessions at Mudeford Wood Community Centre, there has been an additional session added. It’s now 5-6pm coaching for 8-11 year olds and 6-7pm tournament sessions for 12-16 year olds. Just turn up and play, it’s free!

AFC Bournemouth Girls Cup Finals

The AFC Bournemouth Girls teams are currently preparing for their Cup Finals, with the Under-10 and Under-12 girls in League Cup action this weekend, and the Under-14’s in Hampshire Cup weekend the next. We wish them all lots of luck!

Vitality Flagbearers

We were delighted to welcome four Community participants to Saturday’s game as Flagbearers. As a gift from our headline partner Vitality, each child received two tickets to the game, along with an AFC Bournemouth match kit to keep. We hope that Alex, Sophie, Fletcher and Nicole enjoyed their day.
