AFC Bournemouth women were 3-2 winners over Swindon Town on Sunday afternoon, as they maintained their unbeaten start to the National League season.

A screamer from Katie James opened the scoring for Steve Cuss' side, before two penalties from Helen Bleazard put the Cherries in control.

However, the hosts kept on coming and were right in the game at the dying stages, Jess Graham going close to a leveller just moments from time.

Nevertheless, the Bournemouth side stayed strong, coming away with another three points and a 100% record maintained.

Following the game, manager Cuss spoke with afcb.co.uk about the win and an excellent week for his side.

"It was a really tough game against a team that will be near the top at the end of season," he began.

"We weren't at our very best, but there were parts of us that were good and good enough to score the goals. We then had to find a different side to us and it's one that I've been really pleased with at the moment.

"We're finding those ways of winning the tight games. We certainly defended and fought really hard to get the three points."

Cuss went on to discuss his side's three goals, two of which came from penalties. The Cherries manager was pleased with the composure from his players, which ultimately gave granted them the three points.

"We have that ability to shoot from distance, Katie and a few others have that ability. I thought it was an outstanding strike from her to put us in front.

"Then both the penalties were really taken well, very calm from Helen and she picked her spot. Those were tough decisions by the referee and they could've gone either way but they went our way.

"I actually thought one of them did hit the Swindon player's arm, but it could've gone either way. Luckily, the decisions went out way. Helen took the penalties, she was really calm and picked her spot and went with the same spot on both occasions."

Cuss concluded by describing the full-time feeling and the character shown by his side to hang on to a valuable three points at the end.

"I think the feeling at full-time was a little bit of relief," he continued.

"It had been a long week, we had three games in eight days and that is tough on the players. Obviously, it's similar for them and they were chasing them game, but I thought we showed a different side to us.

"We defended well and I wouldn't say they necessarily had a golden opportunity, there were a couple that whizzed past the post.

"Credit to our players after a long week, we found ourselves under pressure and had to show that side to us that we haven't had to do too many times this season. It's so rewarding and really pleasing we can show that."
