Boss updates on Fraser and more

    /media/12276/andrew-surman-ryan-fraser-wigan-team-news.jpg

Eddie Howe has confirmed that he will make a number of changes to his team line-up ahead of the weekend’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic at Vitality Stadium.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Howe said: “We want to win every game we’re involved in, but it’s a possibility that we’ll make changes.

“We have a lot of players who have been patient behind the scenes and they deserve their chance. So, with that in mind, yes, we will make changes to our side.”

“The only players who will definitely miss out are King, Stanislas, Mings and Defoe. Everyone else is fit.

“We do have a few niggles within the group, so we’ll choose to look at a few situations and potentially rest a few of the players.”

The manager also moved to clarify Ryan Fraser’s situation, after he sat out of the New Year’s Day draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.

He added: “Ryan felt some discomfort in his hamstring after the Everton game. With the Brighton game coming so soon after, we decided not to risk him.

“He’s come through that period fine, so we expect everything to be good with him from this point.”

    3pm KICK-OFF

We get our third-round tie with Wigan Athletic in the Emirates FA Cup underway.

    Five point preview: Wigan Athletic

    /media/12272/goalscoring.jpg

Wigan Athletic will provide a stern test in the Emirates FA Cup third round against the Cherries on Saturday.

Here, we look at five key points to look out for in the build up to the game, which sees League One’s highest scorers and a defence on a mean run travel to Vitality Stadium.

WIGAN TO ATTACK AT VITALITY STADIUM…

Despite being the lower league side in the tie, Latics manager Paul Cook has promised his side will not sit back and look for a replay at Vitality Stadium.

"The emphasis, which we’re seeing it a lot in the modern game - and we’ll never do it, I don’t care who we play, we’ll never park the bus.

"While I’m manager of this club, I don’t care who we play, at home or away, we won’t do it."

    GOALSCORING RECORD…

The highest goal scorers in League One, the Latics sit top of the table, two points clear of nearest challengers Shrewsbury Town.

Former Manchester United man Nick Powell leads the way in the scoring charts, having picked up 11 goals from midfield, while frontman Will Grigg is indeed on fire, scoring ten league strikes.

With 15 different goal scorers in the league and a recent 7-0 win over Oxford United under their belts, the Latics have a huge goal threat.

THEIR FA CUP RUN THUS FAR…

Paul Cook’s side have played three Emirates FA Cup ties to get to the third round.

They were 2-1 winners over Crawley Town at home in November in round one, while they were taken to a replay in the second round following a 1-1 draw away to non-league Fylde.

The second-round replay saw the League One side triumph 3-2 to make their way to the tie with the Cherries.

    DEFENSIVE RUN…

We mentioned their attacking prowess earlier on, but the Latics have been stout at the back as well.

The Christmas run in has been hectic, but it’s seen Athletic keep five consecutive clean sheets.

In fact, the last time they conceded was in the Emirates FA Cup, in that 3-2 win over Fylde in the round two replay.

They haven’t conceded a league goal since November.

    FA CUP HISTORY…

The Latics claimed the first major trophy in their 81-year history after Ben Watson's last-minute goal won the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley in 2013.

A day that the entire footballing world remembers, City were firm favourites heading into the game but the Latics had only one shot on target in the match to win it.

Watson’s near-post header, just eight minutes after coming on, sent that Latics team into folklore alongside the likes of Sunderland in 1973, Southampton in 1976 and Wimbledon in 1988.

Ref Watch: Andy Madley in charge of cup clash

Referee Andy Madley speaks to Millwall's Steve Morison and the Cherries' Tyrone Mings.

Andy Madley will be the man in the middle for our FA Cup clash against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The official, who is the older brother of Premier League referee Bobby Madley, has taken charge of 21 Championship affairs this season, handing out 60 yellow cards and awarding three penalties. However, he is yet to send a player off this season.

Elsewhere, Madley has officiated just the one game in League One, three EFL Cup encounters and an under-20 elite league game between Italy and the Netherlands.

Having worked his way up from refereeing reserve team football in 2009, there is no doubt that the Yorkshireman possesses plenty of experience and was coincidentally in charge of the Cherries' last FA Cup outing at Millwall.

On Saturday, Madley will be assisted by Harry Lennard and Matt Foley, with Charles Breakspear the fourth official.
