Maliq Cadogan’s late winner meant it was heartbreak for the Cherries development squad as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at Swansea City on Monday.
Striker Cadogan’s 31st-minute opener saw Alan Connell’s men fall behind at Landore Academy, before Balraj Landa levelled with his third goal in five games just before half-time.
Max Kinsley then put the Cherries ahead early in the second half with his second goal of the season, before Glory Nzingo slotted in a leveller for the hosts five minutes from time.
And Cadogan ensured he had the last say, turning and finishing inside the box to secure his team all three points in stoppage time.
The Cherries went into the contest knowing just a point would have taken them second in the Professional Development League, following Millwall’s 2-2 draw with Colchester earlier in the day.
They faced a Swansea side who had failed to record a win in their past four games in all competitions.
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and fashioned the first chance via a set-piece on nine minutes.
Dom Sadi’s outswinging free-kick was challenged for by Kinsey at the back post. The defender’s effort was comfortably gathered by home keeper Archie Matthews.
Matthews then pulled off a sublime stop to deny the Cherries the opener midway through the first half.
Noa Boutin charged forward from left-back and delivered a menacing, low cross. Frontman Jonny Stuttle slid in to add the finishing touch, only for Matthews to deny him with a fine reaction save.
But it was the Swans who opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark, Cadogan latching on to a loose ball and applying a cool finish.
The Welsh side could have added a second six minutes before the interval. Cameron Congreve was set free down the left and when he found Cadogan, the forward could only steer wide from inside the six-yard box.
Connell’s men stuck to the task and found a leveller four minutes into first-half stoppage time.
After working the ball neatly down the left, Kian Tydeman set the ball back for Landa to curl home from the edge of the box past a sprawling Matthews.
The Cherries then added a second to their tally four minutes after the restart.
After Stuttle was played through and challenged by Matthews, skipper Kinsey was on hand to smash home the loose ball.
Keeper Cameron Plain then got down well to his left to deny Congreve’s fizzing effort and keep his side ahead.
The Cherries almost had their third with 15 minutes remaining. Euan Pollock, who had come off the bench on his return from injury, saw his diving header cleared off the line.
But the hosts rallied and found their second when Nzingo linked up with Cadogan and found the bottom corner.
Cadogan then found space inside the box during the dying moments to drill past Plain and send the home side into raptures.
