AFC Bournemouth women’s skipper Maisy Smith is clear on the goal for this weekend’s Hampshire Senior Cup tie with Moneyfields Ladies.

The Moneys travel to Long Lane on Sunday (2pm kick-off) for the second time this season after a league visit in August.

A late Katie Shorter strike for Moneyfields that day snatched a point from the jaws of defeat in a 1-1 draw on Cherries turf, leaving Smith keen to exact some revenge.

“We definitely want to go one better,” the captain told afcb.co.uk.

“They scored in the last minute in that game, so it was quite unlucky for us. We’ll definitely be wanting to go out there and better that result on Sunday.”

While clear on the team’s goal ahead of Sunday’s cup clash, Smith was under no allusions of the level of test for Steve Cuss’ team.

She explained: “We love playing against Moneyfields because it’s always a good game against them.

“It’s never an absolute thrashing for either side, it’s always a tight game against them and I know they love playing us, too.

“It’ll definitely be a good one, and everyone loves playing in the cup.

“We’re out of all the other cups now, so we want to win this one. We both lost at the weekend as well, so we’ll both be wanting to bounce back.”

Last time out the Cherries were knocked out of one of those other cup competitions by Exeter City.

Despite staging a second-half fightback at the Exwick Community Hub, Smith and her side were beaten 4-2 in the Women’s FA Cup.

While exiting the illustrious competition comes as a disappointment for the women’s skipper, the defender is remaining focussed on what lays ahead.

“We have a lot of big characters in the team that try and pick the girls up and go again,” she said.

“There’s been a good attitude in training this week and we know that we’ve lost a few this season, so we pick ourselves up and go again.

“Our focus is fully on the next game because once the last one is over, it’s over, and we can’t do anything about it now.

“We have to keep the positivity amongst the girls and go again.”
