Under-18s lead coach James Lowy has labelled victory over Newcastle United a “fantastic night” ahead of his side taking on Cardiff City.

Having delivered a sensational performance to win 5-0 at St James’ Park in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night, league action returns on Saturday.

Looking back on the cup victory ahead of taking on the Bluebirds, Lowy told afcb.co.uk: “First and foremost, what an incredible opportunity and experience for the boys to be able to play under the lights at St James’ Park.

“It was one that you could tell they were really looking forward to, and that added to the occasion itself.

“That’s the beauty of the FA Youth Cup that you can provide young players with these sorts of opportunities to play at iconic stadiums.

“It’s one that they’ll definitely never forget.”

Ash Clarke got the scoring underway in the North East, with Jonny Stuttle going on to net a hat-trick while Jack Holman slammed in an unbelievable free-kick from range.

Going up against category one opposition, the lead coach was impressed with the control his team showed against the higher-rated side.

He said: “They controlled the game well with the ball and, at times, without the ball. So overall, it was a really pleasing performance.

“It was a fantastic night for the academy and the club, and has shown how far the group has come in terms of their mentality and willingness to work hard; they got their reward for that.

“All in all, it was a fantastic night and I’m sure it will be an experience the players will never forget.”

A return to the Professional Development League sees the Cherries take on Cardiff away from home on Saturday 20th January (1pm kick-off).
