AFC Bournemouth striking prospect Ash Clarke is relishing the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some Premier League greats.

Clarke will be hoping to lead the line when the Cherries step out at St James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday (7pm kick-off).

The 18-year-old frontman netted both goals as James Lowy’s team stunned category-one opponents West Brom last month, triumphing 2-0 at The Hawthorns in the third round.

Clarke, who hails from the Isle of Wight, is enjoying a productive season with the Cherries under-18s having netted 14 goals and provided four assists in their maiden campaign in category two.

He will be hoping to maintain his impressive form under the lights at an iconic venue which has been graced by a host of star names, including Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s top goalscorer.

Clarke told afcb.co.uk: “St James’ Park is probably one of the best stadiums in England and we can’t wait to play there.

“As an away team, it’s probably one of the toughest places to go as well.

"There won’t be anywhere near as many fans for our game as for a first-team game but it is still going to be an amazing experience.

“I know Alan Shearer is a Newcastle legend and Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak play for them now. To step on the same pitch will be a crazy memory for all of us.”

Newcastle, whose under-18 coach is Graeme Carrick, the younger brother of Michael Carrick, set up a date with the Cherries by recording a 7-2 win over Leyton Orient in the third round.

FA Youth Cup winners in 1962 and 1985, the Magpies are currently fourth in the northern section of the Under-18 Premier League and Clarke is under no illusions they will be formidable opponents.

He added: “Winning away at West Brom in the last round will give us a great deal of confidence going into the game.

“We know they will be a good side and will have quality players. They are doing well in their league so we know it’s going to be a tough game.

“Both teams are going to want to put on a good performance and make further progress in the competition.

“The gaffer (James Lowy) and Surs (Andrew Surman) will make sure we are well prepared for the game and we will go there and give it our best shot.”
