Adam Smith returns to the AFC Bournemouth starting line-up for tonight’s Carabao Cup third-round encounter with Stoke City at Vitality Stadium.

Smith is one of eight changes made by Cherries head coach Andoni Iraola following defeat at Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The defender, who has been on the bench for the past three games, gets his first taste of competitive match action after suffering a muscle injury during pre-season.

Smith takes the captain’s armband with skipper Neto replaced by Andrei Radu, the Romanian goalkeeper having made his debut for the club in the second-round victory at Swansea last month.

Marcos Senesi, David Brooks, Joe Rothwell, Hamed Traorè, Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo, who were all on the bench at the Amex Stadium, return to the starting line-up.

Brooks and Traorè were both on target in the 3-2 win against the Swans, with Ryan Christie grabbing the Cherries’ dramatic late deciding goal.

Tyler Adams is named in a matchday squad for the first time since his arrival from Leeds in the transfer window, the midfielder among the Cherries substitutes.

However, fellow new recruit Luis Sinisterra is cup-tied having played for former club Leeds in the previous two rounds against Shrewsbury and Salford.

Cherries goalkeeper Mark Travers, who is on loan with the Potters, is ineligible to face his parent club, although Ben Pearson is named in the Stoke starting line-up.

League Cup winners in 1972 when they beat Chelsea in the final, Stoke have previously met the Cherries on one occasion in the competition, winning a fourth-round tie in 1963/64.

The Cherries, who reached the quarter-finals in 2017/18 and 2018/19, are looking to book a place in the fourth round for the second season in succession having defeated Everton at this stage last year.
