Cultured AFC Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi says he is looking forward to playing the Andoni Iraola way.

Senesi enjoyed a stellar debut season at Vitality Stadium, featuring 31 times in the Premier League as the Cherries finished five points clear of the drop zone in 15th.

Signed from Feyenoord 12 months ago, Senesi says Iraola’s high-intensity approach is similar to the way he played under Dick Advocaat and Arne Slot in Eredivisie.

The 26-year-old Argentina international has impressed during the Cherries’ four pre-season friendlies and was on the scoresheet in the 3-1 defeat by Atalanta on Saturday.

Discussing Iraola’s impact on the squad so far, Senesi said: “When a few ex-teammates heard he was coming, they texted me straightaway and said he was a good coach and had a good way of playing.

“I like the way he wants to play. Of course, it is something we are going to have to develop because we have played differently and have to get used to his ideas.

“He is showing us the way he wants to play. I think you can see where we are and the places we have to improve as a team and that’s what he’s doing now.

“He wants us to play as high as possible as a team, try to press high and try to be able to play there. I think it is something we have to get used to and start doing it.

“I like it. I used to play that way at Feyenoord and it was something I got used to. Hopefully, we can do it this season.”

Senesi had a baptism of fire in the Premier League, tasting defeats by Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in his first three appearances.

But after Gary O’Neil had replaced Scott Parker as head coach, Senesi started 28 games and was a key figure in ensuring the club achieved its goal of remaining in the top flight.

“I was really happy with my first season,” he said “Being fit and able to play every game was nice. I had one small injury which lasted less than a week.

“It was a good season to grow as a player and as a person. We had a tough start but the team showed character and stuck together. We were strong and achieved our goal.”
