AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo achieved a lifelong dream as he made his Africa Cup of Nations debut on Sunday.
However, the opening group game for Semenyo's Ghana side went badly as a last-minute goal gave Cape Verde the win.
Having sensed an opportunity to take control of Group B following Egypt's draw with Mozambique, Chris Hughton's team felt they should have won a penalty early on as Semenyo was dragged to the floor in the area.
Jamiro Monteiro gave Cape Verde a shock lead as he turned home from close range and Ghana began the search for an equaliser.
They thought they had it through following good work from Semenyo, who sent in a brilliant cross which hit Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer and struck the post, the follow up shot from Majeed Ashimeru flew into the back of the net!
Unfortunately, an offside Ghana player was blocking the goalkeeper's eyeline and the goal was disallowed.
Alexander Djiku did equalise in the second half as Semenyo, who had been leading the line, was replaced in the 62nd minute.
Disaster struck in stoppage time though as Garry Rodrigues tucked home to give Cape Verde a dramatic win and claim all three points.
It means Ghana will be desperate to defeat Egypt on Thursday to try and retain hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.
