Gavin Kilkenny played a starring role as Republic of Ireland under-21s continued their strong European Championship qualification form.

The 22-year-old started as Bosnia and Herzegovina visited Dublin with the Irish needing a win to keep the pressure on Sweden and Italy, who occupy the top two positions in the group.

The midfielder was heavily involved in the action, his pass to West Ham’s Ademipo Odubeko was touched on to Southampton Will Smallbone, and he fired a low shot under Bosnia goalkeeper Luka Damjanovic.

Kilkenny had a similar role in the second goal, picking up the ball close to his own area and playing a superb defence-splitting pass to Odubeko, who exchanged a clever one-two before finishing.

The Cherries man was replaced in the 79th minute by Dawson Devoy, before Smallbone added a third goal.

Kilkenny will be in action again on Monday when Ireland welcome Montenegro.

Philip Billing was an unused substitute for Denmark as they kickstarted their Nations League campaign with a memorable win over world champions France.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for France before Andreas Cornelius found the net twice to secure the victory.

James Hill was also an unused substitute as England under-21s defeated Czech Republic in Ceske Budejovice.

Emile Smith Rowe and Jacob Ramsey scored for England before Daniel Fila grabbed a late consolation for the hosts.

The win was an important one for England, who now need just four points from their remaining three matches to qualify for Euro 2023, and Hill will hope to make his under-21 debut in the coming games.

Finally, development squad winger Marcus Daws watched on as Northern Ireland under-21s suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Spain.

The Spanish have dominated group C and scored six goals at Inver Park, former Cherries loanee Rodrigo Riquelme proving pivotal with a goal and an assist.
