Coach Alan Connell singled out Kian Tydeman for special praise after his finely-taken double had earned the AFC Bournemouth development squad victory in their opening pre-season friendly.

Tydeman’s second-half heroics saw the Cherries come from a goal down to run out 2-1 victors against Southern Premier League Poole Town at the BlackGold Stadium on Tuesday.

Former Cherries midfielder Wes Fogden, who featured prominently in the club’s promotion to the Championship in 2012/13, drew first blood for the Dolphins in the 35th minute.

But Tydeman (pictured below), who graduated from the under-18s last season, marked his first game for the development squad with a deft finish on 72 minutes and an emphatic winner three minutes from time.

A youthful Cherries squad included a mix of under-18s, under-19s, development squad players, two trialists and first-team striker Jamal Lowe, who featured for around 70 minutes.

Connell told afcb.co.uk: “Kian is a very intelligent footballer and he believes in himself.

“If you give him a chance in front of goal, you would always fancy him and he proved that tonight. He had two chances and they were two lovely finishes.

“There is a lot of physical development to come from him but he wants to learn and I’m delighted he’s with us in the development squad.

“His scholarship certainly wasn’t without its setbacks and he was injured for most of his first year which was frustrating for him and us.

“He had a more consistent run of games during his second year, especially during the second half of the season when he really showed his quality.

“His quality has never been in doubt, it’s just been a case of keeping him training regularly and playing regularly. If we can do that, he will continue to develop and improve and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Poole goalkeeper Luke Cairney saved from Lowe and Daniel Adu-Adjei before Fogden opened the scoring from close range.

Another smart stop from Cairney prevented Lewis Brown from restoring parity on the stroke of half-time.

Tydeman, one of a host of changes made by Connell at the break, turned the tide in favour of the visitors to settle an entertaining contest.

Connell added: “The performance was rusty. On the ball, we were rushed and there were a lot of unforced errors which led to us giving away the ball more than I would have wanted.

“Physically, I asked the boys to give everything and I thought they did. From a work-out perspective, it was very worthwhile.

“We had players playing more minutes than we would want but that’s down to the circumstances of the under-18s and the first team being away at the moment.

“There’s lots we need to improve on. We will review it and, with the increased fitness and sharpness, those improvements will come.

“I’m excited because I really believe in this group and the fact that there is so much more to come from them is very encouraging. It was a rusty night but a good workout.”
