Former footballer Paul Stewart visited Vitality Stadium last week, giving an inspirational talk to raise safeguarding awareness.

The ex-England international, who got three caps for his country, played for the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, where he scored in the final of their FA Cup triumph in 1991.

Paul bravely chatted about his experiences of being abused as a child, having first waivered his anonymity to speak out in 2016 after over 40 years.

He spoke about his journey through childhood, which included stories of being sexually and physically abused every day for four years by his junior football coach.

The 58-year-old recalled how it impacted on his life during his adult playing career and beyond, where he became addicted to alcohol and drugs.

Staff from across the club, academy and Community Sports Trust were in attendance and partook in the safeguarding awareness session, while Paul also delivered a session to academy scholars.

Speaking in the club’s Top Floor Restaurant, he reflected on his journey: “In this day and age, we talk about mental health and it’s massively important. I think we can look after each other.

“It’s important to listen to what others have to say, as it might be the most important conversation of the day.

“I want young footballers today to know that they can always talk to someone if they need to, about anything.”

Meredith Hack, Head of Safeguarding at AFC Bournemouth, also commented: "Paul’s story is incredibly powerful and thought provoking, raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding within football. I would like to echo Paul in saying that it is vital for people to speak up and report any concerns they have."

AFC Bournemouth would like to thank Paul for his time and for sharing his story so courageously with those across the club.
