Kyle Taylor made his 20th appearance for Southend United in their 0-0 draw with promotion-chasing Salford City at Roots Hall.
Taylor, who was replaced by Alan McCormack in the 57th minute, played his part as Mark Molesley’s team edged two points clear of the drop zone.
The 21-year-old midfielder fired off target four minutes before half-time and also supplied the assist when Shaun Hobson had a shot saved in the first half.
Tyler Cordner was an unused substitute for the Shrimpers who visit Cheltenham and Oldham in their next two games.
Frank Vincent had a late chance to level for Walsall during their 2-1 defeat by in-form Bradford City at the Banks’s Stadium.
Vincent, who replaced Sam Perry in the 64th minute, saw his left-foot shot from the centre of the box clear the crossbar five minutes from time.
Goals from Levi Sutton and former Saddlers striker Andy Cook either side of half-time put the Bantams 2-0 ahead before Dan Scarr halved the arrears.
Jake Scrimshaw came off the bench to make his ninth appearance for Newport County in their 0-0 draw with Stevenage at Rodney Parade.
In a game of few clear-cut chances, Scrimshaw replaced Dom Telford in the 66th minute as the Exiles remained sixth in the table.
SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP
Zeno Ibsen Rossi looked on from the bench as Kilmarnock ended their eight-match losing streak after drawing 1-1 with Dundee United at Rugby Park.
Zech Medley scored Killie’s first goal in 571 minutes to cancel out Adrian Sporle deflected shot which gave the Tangerines a first-half lead.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brennan Camp featured as Weymouth drew 2-2 at King’s Lynn with all four goals coming in the space of 23 minutes in the first half.
The Terras twice took the lead through Andy Dallas and Andy Robinson, only for Tyler Denton and Cameron King to level as Camp made his 19th appearances this season.
