Women’s Development Squad remain unbeaten

AFC Bournemouth Women’s development squad maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Winchester City at Canford Sports 3G.

Morgan Hill scored the only goal for the Cherries to cancel out Winchester’s early strike.

The visitors started well and caused early trouble for the AFC Bournemouth backline with some neat team moves.

And Winchester’s persistence soon paid off when they took the lead, after an under-hit back-pass to Cherries goalkeeper Steph Small was intercepted and slotted home ten minutes in.

The home side were struggling to enforce their style of play upon the game and it took a little while before a first chance was created. A good team move set Helen Corbin through on goal, only for her shot to fall narrowly wide of the far post.

With the Cherries buoyed, they soon found a leveller. An excellent cross from Amy Anderson on the right wing found its way to Hill, who controlled an awkward bounce before spinning her body to shoot past the Winchester goalkeeper.

With 25 minutes of the half remaining, it would continue to be the hosts that pressed, with Corbin and Ayuma Asira both having opportunities.

The second half started as the first ended, with Bournemouth piling on the pressure and creating numerous chances.

Corbin and Anderson were among the many Cherries players who produced shots that were either blocked by a resolute Winchester backline or well saved by the opposition goalkeeper.

This theme was to continue for the whole of the second half and, with only minutes left on the clock, Emily Gard rose well to turn a header from a corner goalwards, yet another excellent save denied the Cherries a winner.

Head Coach, David Staddon spoke to afcb.co.uk following the game.

“I was happy with our overall display and pleased that we kept our unbeaten run going.”
