Walking Footballers selected for England

AFC Bournemouth's Community Sports Trust are delighted to announce that three players from the Walking Football programme have been selected to play for England in the IWFF World Championships this summer.

Garry Malone and David Harris will represent the over 50s, and Derek Baker will be playing in the over 70s team as they fly to Italy.

As well as the hosts, the England teams will be facing opposition from France, Sweden, India, Algeria, Indonesia and Australia in a four day tournament, which runs between 14th and 17th July.

Speaking to afcb.co.uk after their selection, Malone commented: “It promises to be an incredible experience and we have been training like crazy to be as fit as possible, especially with the soaring temperatures predicted over there.”

Harris added: “we can’t wait to get there, put on some great performances and hopefully bring the cup home!”

The three walking footballers have been taking part in the Community Sports Trust's walking football activities, which are sponsored by Care South. They participate in the weekly recreational activities alongside the team training sessions, which the trust offer to support those looking to play in competitive fixtures representing AFC Bournemouth.

Speaking ahead of the opportunity, head of community Steve Cuss said: “Congratulations to Garry, David and Derek on the prestigious honour of being selected to play for England.”

“We are delighted that through the pathway created for Walking Football, the three players have been recognised. We wish them the best of luck in the upcoming tournament.”

The walking football programme offers opportunities for anyone aged 50+ to get involved in weekly sessions, whether at a beginners level, recreational activities or for those looking at competitive opportunities.
