AFC Bournemouth hosted a Show Racism the Red Card event at Vitality Stadium earlier this week.
Year five pupils from St. James’ Primary School took part in the workshop, which began with a talk from campaign officer, Ben Holman.
The students were then given booklets to fill in throughout the afternoon, enhancing their education on racism and encouraging them to think up some questions surrounding the topic.
Towards the end of the day, these questions were then put to a very special panel, which included first team defender Nathan Ake, club ambassador Steve Fletcher, and women’s player Ayuma Asira.
Ake, Fletcher and Asira were on hand to share their experiences and teach the children how they can report any racism heard in the local community.
To end the afternoon, the best questions asked by the pupils were rewarded, with footballs and t-shirts given away.
However, no-one left empty handed as all participants received a goody bag and a signed poster from the panel.
Following the event, Ake spoke to afcb.co.uk about the event and topic of racism.
“Lately, it’s been coming up a lot, so days like this are always good,” he began.
“The children have engaged in some really good questions today. They’ve done really well in asking about how they overcome racism and at their age it’s important to educate children about it.
“I haven’t personally experienced racism luckily, but it’s good to try and help where I can.”
