Cherries pair are Euro stars

Chris Mepham and Harry Wilson both featured as Wales secured qualification for Euro 2020 thanks to a memorable 2-0 win over Hungary last night.

Mepham was named in the starting line-up and won his 10th cap while Wilson replaced Gareth Bale two minutes from time at Cardiff City Stadium.

Bale supplied the cross for Aaron Ramsey to head home the opening goal after 15 minutes before the Juventus man doubled their lead two minutes into the second half.

Next summer's European Championship will be Wales' second in succession, the country having gone 58 years between its first appearance at a major tournament, the 1958 World Cup and its second at Euro 2016.

Nathan Ake was on target in the Netherlands’ comprehensive 5-0 victory over Estonia at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

Ake doubled their lead when he headed home a cross from Memphis Depay in the 18th minute, Georginio Wijnaldum having opened the scoring.

Wijnaldum netted twice in the second half to complete his hat-trick while 18-year-old debutant Myron Boadu rounded off the rout late on.

The Netherlands, who had already booked a place at the finals, finished second in Group C, two points behind winners Germany.

Gavin Kilkenny came off the bench in the closing stages of the Republic of Ireland’s emphatic 4-1 win over Sweden in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

Kilkenny replaced Tottenham’s Troy Parrott, one of the Republic’s four goalscorers, four minutes from time as they went three points clear at the top of Group One.

Viktor Gyökeres opened the scoring for Sweden at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, the first home goal conceded by the Republic during the current campaign.

But second-half goals from Lee O’Connor, Adam Idah, Parrott and Zack Elbouzedi saw the Republic make it 16 points from seven games, a record tally for Ireland under-21s.

Aaron Ramsdale captained England under-21s as they suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands in Doetinchem.

The Cherries goalkeeper was beaten by a stunning injury-time free-kick from Javairo Dilrosun, the Hertha frontman netting from 25 yards.

Kaj Sierhuis’s 23rd-minute opener was cancelled out by Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood 15 minutes from time before Dilrosun had the final say.

Jefferson Lerma came off the bench in Colombia's 1-0 win against Ecuador in a friendly at the Red Bull Arena in New York.

Lerma replaced Mateus Uribe after 73 minutes, the Porto midfielder having scored the only goal just before half-time.
