Wilson: I'd always wanted to play Premier League football, this club gave me that opportunity and I wanted to stay

Written by afcb.co.uk

Wilson was injured for the majority of last season, the Cherries’ first in the top flight, but he did manage to score five Premier League goals in six games before his knee injury ruled him out from September to April.

Now fully fit and fresh from committing his future to the Cherries until 2020, the 24-year-old is keen to repay the club that gave him the opportunity at proving himself in the top flight.

"I thought it was key to come back to pre-season with the focus solely on football so it's good to sign in that regard," Wilson told Cherries Player HD.

"Also, I was injured last year when we'd been promoted and I'd always wanted to play Premier League football. This club gave me that opportunity and I wanted to stay.

"I'm making up for lost time and I want to establish myself as a Premier League player, I'm always going to improve under this manager and this club so it was an easy decision to sign the new contract and commit my future here.”

Wilson has been maintaining the fitness he worked to achieve during his rehabilitation at the back end of last season.

Despite a busy summer, where the striker got married, he has been looking forward to returning and believes the club are continuing to head in the right direction.

"I've had a busy summer, I've had four holidays, a wedding, honeymoon and all sorts!” Wilson continued.

"It's gone really quickly, although I've had time to unwind I didn't want to lose the fitness I accumulated at the end of last season, I maintained it across the summer and feel like I'm in good shape.

"I'm excited for the new season, I'm not going to blow my own trumpet having not scored since my injury. But I'm going to work hard as I always do, listen and learn from the manager and keep going.

"Having maintained our Premier League status it's an exciting time, we've signed new players and a few have departed so there will be a bit of change. But the team spirit is still massive and we're heading in the right direction."
