Following the departure of Tommy Elphick to Aston Villa, manager Eddie Howe has given the title to the 31-year-old, with Andrew Surman taking Francis’ previous role as vice captain.
Francis, who has been an integral part of the side since signing in 2011, wore the armband in Elphick’s absence through injury last season and, speaking exclusively from the club’s training base in Chicago, has described the news as a ‘huge privilege’.
“I’m delighted. Having been able to take on the mantle of the armband last season in Tommy’s absence when he got the injury early on, it was a huge step for me,” he told Cherries Player HD.
“I had captained the club previously in the Championship and I enjoyed every minute of it.
“I enjoyed every aspect of taking control of the situation and being able to lead the lads out and lead by example, as I did hopefully on a few occasions and I continued it last season as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
“Even the games you aren’t successful in you still take responsibility as captain. Next season is a huge season for me and it's one I’m looking forward to as captain.
“I am hugely grateful to the gaffer for considering me. Having spoken to him at the start of pre-season he told me his intentions to make me club captain and it’s just a massive privilege to have that name now.”
