The game, which honoured cult figure Warren Cummings, saw recent loan recruit Jack Wilshere make his first appearance in an AFC Bournemouth shirt whilst there was a welcome return from injury for Tyrone Mings.
Substitute Lys Mousset also impressed, emerging from the bench to equalise Suso’s opening goal before later twice hitting the woodwork.
But in the end all attention turned to Cummings, who made a cameo appearance from the bench before collecting the club’s man of the match award in front the Cherries support.
Speaking after the game Howe told BBC Radio Solent, “It’s really important that we don’t forget the people that have done such wonderful things in the history of the club.
“Warren was one of the players who was at the club during its darkest hour. The club had huge financial troubles and I stood shoulder to shoulder with him through most of that period. He was a really infectious character and a great guy to be around.
“Warren would always play with his heart on his sleeve and I think that it’s a really touching moment that the club have rewarded him with this game.”
Reflecting on the game itself, the manager added, “There were a lot of good things to come out of it. Our players needed the game time and it was a good experience for the younger guys that played.
“Overall I thought we dominated the game and there’s plenty for us to think about. Several of the boys did really well today and we had a few players returning from injury.
“Tyrone Mings’ return is obviously a huge boost for everyone connected with the club. It was also good to see Junior Stanislas back out there.
“Tyrone has worked so hard behind the scenes. He’s put an incredible amount of effort to get to where he is right now. We have to ensure we keep him fit because I thought in the time that he was on the pitch we saw all of the attributes he brings to our side.
“When you have that length of time out it’s important that we build the individual up slowly and that’s what we’ll be doing with Tyrone.
“Jack Wilshere also came in and did very well. I thought he showed his technical quality in and around the box. He worked really hard for the team which is of course important.
“We’re looking forward to working with Jack further and integrating him into our team.”
