Jefferson Lerma has established himself as a key player on the pitch and a hugely-popular figure off it since joining AFC Bournemouth from La Liga outfit Levante in August 2018.
He made his 100th league appearance for the club in the Cherries’ 4-1 win over Championship rivals Coventry City at Vitality Stadium in April 2021.
Lerma quickly adjusted to the English game and enjoyed an impressive debut season, featuring 30 times in the Premier League as the Cherries finished 14th in 2018/19.
He also Lerma capped his maiden campaign with the club by winning the goal-of-the-season award for his stunning strike at Crystal Palace on the final day.
Lerma netted once in 33 games in the Premier League as the Cherries lost their top-flight status on the final day of the 2019/20 season.
Before signing for the Cherries, Lerma had recently broken into the Colombia national squad, making his senior debut under Jose Peckerman against Korea Republic in November 2017.
His impressive club form would help Lerma secure a spot in the Colombia squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, during which he featured in all four of his nation’s games.
Lerma made his professional debut at club level with Atletico Huila in his native Colombia in 2013.
Two years later, he joined Levante on a season-long loan before the move was made permanent.
His continued impressive form earned praise from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and, despite relegation to the Segunda Division, Lerma stuck around at Levante to help them bounce back to La Liga at the first time of asking.
In the summer of 2019, Lerma helped Colombia reach the quarter-final of Copa America, starting the group game against Paraquay and coming off the bench against Argentina.
Lerma scored his first goal for his country in a 2-2 draw against Chile in Santiago in a World Cup qualifier in October 2020.
