Women’s team promoted to National League

AFC Bournemouth are delighted to announce the promotion of its Women’s team to the FA National League.

Steve Cuss’ side will move into the fourth tier next season and compete in South West Division One.

The decision comes after the club applied for a process of upward movement, after the season was declared null and void for the second year in a row due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

With the introduction of a tier system in December and a national lockdown coming into place in January, it meant that the Cherries had played just one league game in 2020/21, an 11-0 win away at Oxford City.

An impressive FA Cup run also saw them reach the first round proper for just the second time in history, having knocked out Southampton Women and Buckland Athletic of the National League in the process.

After a disrupted season, and the side being sat top of the league in March last year, before the 2019/20 campaign was curtailed, Cuss couldn’t be happier to see his side promoted.

Speaking with afcbTV, he said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the news that we'll be going into the National League next season.

"It's been a disruptive couple of years with the pandemic and the regular season being declared null and void, but we're thrilled that our results have been taken into account and we've been rewarded with promotion.

"I'm so proud of the girls. Their attitude has been fantastic, they've always had a smile on their face and this is exactly what they deserve."
