AFC Bournemouth made a successful defence of the Adopt South Women’s Hampshire Senior Cup after triumphing 3-1 against Southampton under-21s on Monday.

Kenni Thompson, Lucy Cooper and Erin Bloomfield were on target at Aldershot’s EBB Stadium as the Cherries emerged victorious in a repeat of last season’s final.

Victory for Steve Cuss’s team capped a remarkable season which saw them pipped for promotion by Exeter City despite remaining unbeaten in National League Division One South West.

Thompson opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 20th minute before the Saints levelled through Kaylee Buckingham, the younger sister of Cherries striker Alisha.

It would remain the only goal conceded by the Cherries in this season’s competition having progressed thanks to wins over Portsmouth (1-0) and Southampton Women reserves (14-0) and a penalty shootout triumph against Moneyfields after their semi-final finished all square at 0-0.

Cooper bagged her 22nd goal of a productive season when she bundled the ball into the back of the net following Thompson’s corner on the stroke of half-time.

And Bloomfield came off the bench to put the finishing touches to the win when she headed home Molly Barron-Clark’s free-kick in the last minute of added time.
