AFC Bournemouth closed the gap on leaders Exeter City to five points courtesy of a 4-0 win over Southampton Women on Thursday.

The Cherries have a game in hand on the Grecians and meet them in Devon on Sunday 5th May, the final day of the season.

Steve Cuss’s team maintained their unbeaten record in the National League thanks to a dominant first-half showing against the Sirens at Test Park.

The Cherries turned on the style and reached the break leading 4-0 thanks to goals from Gemma Hillier, Molly Barron-Clark, Lucy Cooper and Maisy Smith.

Hillier opened the scoring with a composed finish in the sixth minute before Barron-Clark doubled the Cherries’ lead with a stunning 20-yarder in the tenth minute.

Cooper’s emphatic strike, her 19th goal of the season, made it 3-0 in the 14th minute before Smith headed home Barron-Clark’s pinpoint cross to make it 4-0 to the visitors midway through the first half.

The Cherries will be hoping to make up further ground on Exeter when they host Torquay United at Ringwood Community Hub on Sunday (2pm kick-off).
