Under-18s

Quick learner Ollie is keeping busy

Considering his meteoric rise, two games in two days should be a walk in the park for quick learner Ollie Camis.

The 16-year-old started this season as second-choice goalkeeper in the AFC Bournemouth youth team and continuing to learn his trade was probably his main focus.

Fast forward a couple of months though and Camis has been propelled into the spotlight, the fiercely-determined teenager taking it all in his stride.

Capped by Wales under-17s in November, Camis kept a clean sheet on his FA Youth Cup debut in December and did likewise when he made his bow in the Premier League Cup on Thursday.

Just for good measure, Camis added another shut-out to his CV as Alan Connell’s under-18s made further progress in the FA Youth Cup by beating QPR in the fourth round earlier this month.

In the Premier League Cup against Southampton, Camis made a top-drawer save in the closing stages as the Cherries kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage with a 1-0 win.

Rest and recovery will be on his mind as Camis prepares to start his second game in 31 hours when Connell’s young guns host Leicester City in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup at Vitality Stadium on Friday (7pm kick-off).

Camis, who spent seven years with Chelsea before joining the Cherries at under-15 level, told afcb.co.uk: “It was great to make my debut for the development squad and even better to keep a clean sheet. It was a good game to be involved in.

“I was pleased with the save right at the end of the game. I got across and got my body in the way. You need to stay concentrated throughout the whole game because it only takes a second for the other team to score and you don’t get the three points.

“It’s been a busy few months for me. I knew I had to take my opportunity when it came and I still need to keep taking it.

“Playing for Wales under-17s against Portugal was a brilliant experience and then I got my chance in the FA Youth Cup against Exeter.

“That was probably the most nervous game for me because of what had happened the year before when the team lost at Exeter on the same day and at the same stage of the competition.

“A few of the second years spoke about it and we knew they had been in that situation last year so we were desperate to get through.

“We scored early goals against Exeter and QPR and that settled everyone’s nerves in both games. It was great to play at Vitality Stadium in the last round. I loved it, it was a great experience and one I won’t forget in a hurry.

“We’ve got another really tough challenge in Leicester and I’m looking forward to it. They are top of their league but we are going to give it a right go and certainly won’t make it easy for them.”

Camis has continued his education under the watchful eye of Billy Granger, academy head of goalkeeping, and Joe Prodomo, development squad goalkeeper coach.

Born in Chertsey in Surrey, his father Dave played non-league for Egham Town. He will be among the crowd for the visit of the Foxes along with Camis’s mother Caroline, younger brother George and grandfather Fred. His grandparents from Wales are also hoping to make the trip.
