AFC Bournemouth under-18s bowed out of the FA Youth Cup with their heads held high following a 6-2 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

Clinical finishing from the Premier League 2 leaders saw them forge into a 4-0 lead at half-time at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium.

But the Cherries stuck to their task and bagged the first goal of the second half, Remy Rees-Dottin’s header seeing them reduce the arrears in the 56th minute.

Although Spurs netted twice after the break, substitute Jonny Day headed home Jack Holman’s free-kick to complete the scoring late on.

The young Cherries, in their first season with category two academy status, have done the club proud in the competition under boss James Lowy.

Ash Clarke, who was ruled out due to a calf injury against Spurs, scored both goals as the Cherries triumphed 2-0 against category one opposition West Brom in the third round in December.

And a Jonny Stuttle hat-trick, coupled with goals from Clarke and Holman, earned the Cherries a memorable 5-0 win in the fourth round against Newcastle United at St James’ Park last month – one of the greatest results in the club’s history at under-18 level.
