Connell - A really satisfying week

Alan Connell toasted his side's response as they produced a second impressive performance of the week against Newport County following on from a disappointing loss.

The victories came over Southampton in a friendly on Wednesday before they won 2-1 in the Youth Alliance League match against Newport on Saturday.

The pleasing displays came off the back of their Youth Alliance Cup exit at the hands of Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

After the win over the Exiles, Connell spoke with afcb.co.uk about the most recent victory and the keys to his satisfaction.

"After the disappointment of losing to Plymouth last week, the players' response has been everything I would have expected," he began.

"They've trained really well and we've had two really encouraging performances against Southampton and now Newport, both of of which have culminated in results I thought we've thoroughly deserved.

"I thought against Newport we were aggressive from the start both in and out of possession and had a real tenacity to our play and looked capable of scoring going forwards - and we managed to do that twice in the first half through Baylin's positioning to finish and then through a quality cross from Michael and finish from Daniel.

"We were pleased to go in at 2-0 and the message at half time was that the game wasn't over.

"We probably should have had a penalty to go 3-0 up and that would have killed the game but then they scored with a great strike and and all of a sudden there's a momentum shift and it's a totally different game.

"Credit to the players because I thought we handled that really well, regained control and did everything but score. We missed numerous chances which was frustrating, but from a control of the game point of view it was everything that I wanted.

"Of course against a very capable Newport side you're going to have to defend balls in behind, balls in the box and I thought we stood up to that really well and in the end saw the game out really maturely.

"Overall I was pleased knowing that there's plenty we need to work on after a really satisfying week from my perspective."

In midweek at Southampton the young players had been tasked with leading their own matchday, Connell saying that he is already starting to see the benefits of the approach.

He said: "I did see some evidence, you don't always see the benefit of doing that in the short term but I saw some things and heard some things that came off the back of Wednesday.

"Some of the organisation and some of the demands they put on each other, as well as some of the encouragement. There's loads that needs to improve, especially as they get older and step into first-team football.

"But I'm seeing a hungry group and I'm seeing a group that want to do well and want to learn. I said to them afterwards that in everything they do every day they're in an environment where they can't not improve as long as they're willing to give everything every day.

"There will be challenges and bumps in the road but I think we're on the right path even if we've got plenty of work still to do."

Connell also spoke about the impact of Toure Williams, the first year who stepped into the midfield and impressed his manager on Saturday.

"Toure's come into the side and done well in the last two games," the manager said. "He's always had physical challenges against him. I first saw him when he was nine-years-old and he's always been the smallest player - though technically he's very good.

"To see that tenacity from him in midfield against bigger players as well as that positional sense and the way he deals with the ball in tight areas was really pleasing.

"He's set his standard now in these last two games and now he's got to look to build on that and kick on even further.

"In Gavin Kilkenny in that position in the first team he's got a really good role mode to look at."
