Travers signs new long-term deal

Highly-rated goalkeeper Mark Travers has committed his future to AFC Bournemouth by signing a new long-term contract.

The 20-year-old Ireland Under-21 international broke into the Cherries first team at the back end of the 2018/19 campaign, making two appearances including an eye-catching debut against Tottenham Hotspur, in which he kept a clean sheet.

Maynooth-born Travers turned out for a number of youth teams in his homeland before arriving at Vitality Stadium in the summer of 2016.

Since then he has played a key role for the club’s under-21 side and also enjoyed a loan spell in the Southern Premier League with Weymouth in the 2017/18 season, before his promotion to the first team squad.

Travers has represented Ireland from under-15 to under-21 level, and has been named in the last two senior squads for the Boys in Green.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract,” Travers told afcbTV at the club’s training camp in La Manga.

“On a personal note, it was a great end to last season and to now get this deal sorted, it will really help me push on and into the new season.

“As soon as the offer was there I was really keen to sign and commit my future to the club.

“The manager and backroom staff have been brilliant with me. I’ve developed as both a person and player during my time with the club and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

AFC Bournemouth chief executive, Neill Blake, said: “Since joining the club, Mark has developed into an outstanding goalkeeper.

“Mark is a very humble, down-to-earth young man who knows he still has a lot of work to do but his first team involvement to date was fully deserved for his attitude, work ethic and performances behind the scenes.

“Crucially, there is still much more to come from him and so I am delighted that we have agreed a new long-term contract with Mark.”
