AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Three-and-a-half weeks into his new adventure with the Cherries, Rodrigo Riquelme is settling in, has made his debut - and all with a characteristic beaming smile on his face.

The Spanish winger arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid at the start of the month and has already made a big impression on his new team-mates - with plans to similarly impress on the pitch in the coming weeks.

The first on-field glimpse, a late cameo from the bench at Cardiff City on Wednesday, sowed further seeds of excitement, with positivity coming not just from the 20-year-old's feet but from the aura he gives off with those he meets.

Riquelme, along with his trademark expression, linked up with afcb.co.uk to talk a bit more about the start of his time on the south coast and a lot more besides.

From the manager, your team-mates, even the media, everyone who meets you talks about your positive attitude, where does this come from?

I think that this is from my parents, we are a very happy family. The whole time we are laughing and we are making jokes and I think the most important thing in life is to be happy - and I'm happy, very happy!

My family - my father (pictured above with Riquelme), my mother and my brother - we are in a house in Poole and we are all living there now.

My brother is 21, he is 22 in December. His name is Alejandro, he's a very good football player, he's going to play here in England too. I believe in him because he has so many qualities so he has to play.

You made your Cherries debut earlier this week, how was your first taste of English football?

I'm happy of course, not 100% happy because the most important thing is a win for the team, 1-1 on that pitch is not bad but we are Bournemouth and we have to try to win every game.

Of course I am happy for my debut, but we have to win.

You just had a short taste in the game, but what were your first impressions?

It's hard, it's physical but I feel good. I feel it's not too different, I have to become accustomed to it and work hard.

The weather was very... British. What did you think about that?

This weather permits you to feel not too tired. For example, in summer in Spain it's very hot and you feel like you are dead but here it is very different.

I feel very good, I feel like when I'm with the team the staff are very happy, they told me that. I'm happy to be here and to help the team.

How have you found living in Poole so far?

I love it, I love the centre of Bournemouth and Poole is a very nice place for the family to walk with the dog and with your friends. It's a top place.

I don't have a dog, but I want to buy one! An English bulldog, we love that type of dog.

Ah, Dan Gosling has a bulldog, have you spoken to him?

I didn't speak with him yet, I must focus on my football first. Of course, I can give the dog an English name.

Have Diego Rico and Jefferson Lerma, our two native Spanish speakers, helped you settle in here?

Yeah, they are like my second brothers, my big brothers because I am the youngest of the team.

I feel very good with Diego, he lets me be calm when we play football on the pitch and he makes me feel like I am at Atletico Madrid or at home. This is important, and a big part of why I am happy is because of him.

I know Jefferson has found a restaurant that makes him good Colombian food, how about you?

Well, my family and I have found two Spanish restaurants. We went to one two days ago and the food there is not bad at all.

You have to know and learn where to eat but the food here is not bad. Now it will be better at my home with my mum cooking.

I like paella of course, of course! Paella is top. We can get some seafood here and that is very good too.

You've now ticked the box for your Bournemouth debut, we have Watford next, what's your next step?

The next step is to win and to score goals.
