Rico in contention for City start

Diego Rico could be in line to make his first start of the season when AFC Bournemouth face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup tomorrow.

The defender missed the Cherries’ Championship opener against Blackburn and the second round clash against Crystal Palace due to injury.

But after returning to training at the end of last week, Rico came off the bench during the second half of the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium, boss Jason Tindall gave an update on Rico, Junior Stanislas and Charlie Daniels.

He said: “We have no new injury concerns other than a few players carrying little niggles. That’s something we have to be mindful of and make sure we manage them in the right way.

“We’re assessing Junior day by day but he certainly won’t be ready for tomorrow.

“It was great to have Diego back at the weekend albeit he only trained the day before the game. He’s trained this week and is someone who will be involved tomorrow.

“Chaz is training every day. We are building him up day by day and so far he’s had no setbacks so hopefully we’ll see him getting some game time sometime soon.

“When you haven’t had a player for so long, it’s great when they are available again. It was like David Brooks and Lloyd Kelly last season and Chaz is no different.

“There’s no doubt the quality Chaz has and he could make a difference to the team. But first and foremost, it’s about making sure he’s 100 per cent fit.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hinted he could field a number of academy players against the Cherries, while Tindall could again include Jordan Zemura and Nnamdi Ofoborh, who both made their debuts against Palace.

Tindall added: “It’s going to be a tough game but we’re certainly looking forward to it.

“They have some very talented academy players and, as you saw with us against Palace, quite a few of our players came through our academy and it was great to see.

“We had a mix of young players and experienced players and I’m sure it will be no different against Manchester City.

“Whatever team they pick, it’s going to be a good side and I’m sure Pep is not going to pick a team he feels isn’t going to be good enough to win the game.

“Regardless of the team we play against, we just need to make sure we’re ready physically and mentally to give the best account of ourselves.”
