Profile: Freddie Woodman

Freddie Woodman today became an AFC Bournemouth player, signing on loan from Newcastle United until the end of the season.

The ‘keeper, who made his Premier League debut for the Magpies on the opening day of the 2021/22 season, was born in London but has been with the club since 2013.

The shot-stopper moved north from Crystal Palace as a teenager and is the son of ex-United goalkeeping coach, Andy Woodman.

He featured for what was the reserve team in a friendly against York City aged just 14, before later establishing himself with the under-18s on Tyneside.

After loan spells with Hartlepool United, Crawley Town and Kilmarnock, Woodman’s first team debut came in the FA Cup third round win over Luton Town in January 2018. He later went out on loan to Aberdeen for the remainder of that season.

An impressive stint at Swansea City during the 2019/20 season saw him loaned back to South Wales the following year, going on to record 20 clean sheets and consequently picking up the Championship’s Golden Glove award.

Woodman, having made his top-flight debut against the Hammers on the opening day of the current campaign, retained his position for the following three league games, before picking up an injury.

Internationally, he has been capped at every level up to and including the under-21s, making his debut in October 2016 in a 1-0 win over Kazakhstan.

Woodman was part of the England squad that won the European Under-17 Championships in 2014 and the Under-20 World Cup three years later, Lewis Cook also featuring in both squads. Three clean sheets in the latter earned him the Golden Glove award.
