Head coach Scott Parker saw AFC Bournemouth kick off their Championship campaign with a 2-2 draw against West Brom and then expressed his immense pride at his new-look team’s display.
Parker handed full league debuts to Gavin Kilkenny, Jaidon Anthony and Jordan Zemura, while all seven substitutes were products of the Cherries academy ranks.
Anthony and Zemura had a hand in goals from Emi Marcondes and Philip Billing as the hosts twice took the lead against the relegated Baggies.
But the visitors marked Valerien Ismael’s first competitive game in charge by coming back through Dara O’Shea and Callum Robinson.
Asked for his assessment of an entertaining encounter, Parker told the media: “Welcome to the Championship!”
He added: “Firstly, I’m immensely proud of the team and the players.
“West Brom are an experienced side who constantly put you under pressure with their physical presence, corners, throw-ins and set-plays.
“While I think we can improve in certain moments, the first goal comes to mind, for large parts and with a young team, I thought they stood up to it.
“I would like us to have asserted ourselves a bit more at times. We showed our quality and showed what a good side we can be at times.
“I’ve been in the arena in those games and know how difficult they can be. It can be tough and it was tonight.
“For the young players and in terms of their experience of the Championship, it won’t come more brutal and physical than that.
There is still loads to work on and we need to improve in certain areas and we all understand that. But, overall, I’m very pleased.”
Parker confirmed Junior Stanislas had been withdrawn from the squad at the 11th hour after feeling a twinge in his hamstring during the warm-up. Parker said he would be assessed on Saturday.
