Moriah-Welsh starts in Guyana victory

AFC Bournemouth’s Nathan Moriah-Welsh started for Guyana as they claimed victory in their opening CONCACAF National League fixture.

In group B of league B, the Golden Jaguars travelled to the Dominican Republic to face Montserrat and left with three points.

Moriah-Welsh’s side went a goal behind inside 20 minutes despite coming out on top, with a well-worked move finished by Adrian Clifton.

One-way Montserrat traffic was then reversed going into the second half as Guyana were able to complete a nine-minute turnaround.

Omari Glasgow fired both in for the visitors, the first a stellar free kick from range and the second a powerful, low strike from inside the box.

In the comeback at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium, the Cherries’ 20-year-old midfielder was one of five starters to be substituted, being replaced by Billericay Town’s Anthony Jeffrey.

Guyana are next in Nations League action on Tuesday night as they take on Bermuda in the Guyanese village of Leonora.

Elsewhere, stopper Mark Travers was an unused substitute for the Republic of Ireland in their 1-0 defeat to Armenia.

Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher started between the sticks in the Boys in Green’s Nations League group 1 of league B opener.

Eduard Spertsyan’s solitary goal in the 74th minute was enough to see Armenia pick up the three points at Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium.

Jamal Lowe’s Jamaica were also in action, however, he was not named in the matchday squad as they drew 1-1 with Suriname.

Junior Flemmings had given the Reggae Boyz a first-half lead, only for a late own goal from Amal Knight to share the spoils.
