AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth hit the road for the first time in 2018/19 this Saturday, making the trip to London to take on West Ham United.

Jack Rosser from the Evening Standard gave afcb.co.uk his assessment of the Hammers, who started the season with a 4-0 defeat away to Liverpool last Sunday.

afcb.co.uk: What are your thoughts on West Ham after their summer break?

JR: With the summer and the spending that's gone on it's quite an exciting time at the club and all the talk of the new era when the club moved to the new stadium has died out over the last two years because of how it's gone - but it feels like a restart against Bournemouth this weekend.

The commitment shown by the board in terms of how much they've spent and backing the new manager is something that is exciting, now the club's pushing towards the top ten and we'll see how far they can go.

afcb.co.ukWhat do you make of the signings that have been brought into the club during the transfer window?

JR: We'll have to wait and see and the game against Liverpool wasn't the test of how well the new players will do and when you put a lot of new players together, especially flair players, Pellegrini has spoken a lot about how they can change games on their own, but you're still taking a bit of a risk.

Especially against sides in and around West Ham in the table, sides like Bournemouth this weekend, the new players should provide exciting football, not least at home.

afcb.co.uk: Is it a good or a bad time for the Cherries to be heading to the London Stadium?

It's probably not the worst time to be playing West Ham. The first home game of the season is never easy with playing any side but West Ham are not settled under Pellegrini yet and it's going to take a while for them to understand how to defend effectively in his system, which focuses on playing on the front foot.

That means there will be gaps for Bournemouth to exploit and there will be spells in the game when it's going to be tough to hold them back, especially if the likes of Felipe Anderson get going, but I do think there will be worse times to play West Ham this season.

afcb.co.uk: What did we learn, if anything, from West Ham's season opener against Liverpool?

We learned that Liverpool are very good! There will be better sides than West Ham who go to Anfield and lose by three or four goals this season, but it showed that there is still work to do in terms of settling the West Ham side.

The midfield was almost non-existent which shows that at the moment there will be chances for Bournemouth - and vice versa West Ham will get chances too - which makes Saturday's game a really exciting prospect.
