Lewis Cook leads England to U20 World Cup glory

Written by Iain Pearce

England - lead by their Cherries captain Lewis Cook - are under-20s World Cup winners.

The World Cup win came after a tense 1-0 win over Venezuela in South Korea, Lewis Cook lifting the trophy for his nation at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

After an opening half-hour which England edged without getting the breakthrough, Cook played a key role in the game's opening goal.

The Bournemouth man's free kick found Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the air, the Everton attacker able to force past his defender and finish to hand the Three Lions a half-time lead in Suwon.

After the interval Josh Onomah struck the woodwork with a powerful drive as England looked to build on their advantage.

While at the other end Adalberto Penaranda had a golden opportunity for Venezuela, but saw his penalty spectacularly saved by 'keeper Freddie Woodman.

The Three Lions managed to see out the match and in doing so claimed the country's first World Cup triumph since 1966.
