International round up: Cherries in global action

Written by Iain Pearce

A look at the Cherries in national team action across the weekend.

Harry Arter started the Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Austria in Dublin, playing 71 minutes in their World Cup qualifier.

Having impressed in their recent friendly with Uruguay the Bournemouth midfielder was again given the call by manager Martin O'Neill.

Jon Walters equalised for Ireland with five minutes to go as they remained four points clear of Wales in second place of Group D.

In Africa, Benik Afobe made his second appearance for DR Congo as he came off the bench in his side's 3-1 win over neighbours Congo.

The Cherries striker replaced Gael Kakuta in the 52nd minute in Kinshasa as the Leopards secured three points towards 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification in their first group game.

Striker Lys Mousset again started for the France under-21s as Les Bleuets came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Cameroon under-23s in a friendly.

Round-up

There was World Cup glory in South Korea for Lewis Cook, who captained England under-20s to their final win over Venezuela.

There was mixed news for Brad Smith, who started the Socceroos' World Cup-qualifying win over Saudi Arabia, but also picked up a hamstring strain that saw the full-back substituted and ended his hopes of playing in this summer's Confederations Cup.

In Glasgow, Ryan Fraser made his international debut from the bench in the dramatic 2-2 draw with England at Hampden.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic appeared for Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday in a goal-less draw with Greece.
