AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

Nathaniel Clyne put pen to paper on a loan deal with the Cherries until the end of the season.

Following the move, we profiled the defender's career to date and picked out a selection of images which tell his story.

Crystal Palace (2008-12)

Londoner Clyne progressed through the ranks at Selhurst Park and made his debut as a 17-year-old in a 3-0 win against Barnsley in the Championship in October 2008.

He signed his first professional contract with the club two days later – a three-year deal – and scored his first goal in a 4-2 win at Reading in December 2009.

Clyne, then 18, turned down a move to Premier League Wolves in February 2010 after Palace’s administrators had accepted a bid for him.

He was voted player of the year at Selhurst Park in 2010–11 and made 139 appearances for the club in all competitions. He was also named in the PFA Championship team of the season.

Southampton (2012-15)

Clyne signed a four-year deal with Southampton in July 2012 following the Hampshire club’s promotion to the Premier League.

A regular starter during his three-year stay at St Mary’s, he made almost 100 Premier League appearances for the club and established himself as a firm fans’ favourite.

His impressive form during his final season saw him earn a big-money move to Liverpool.

Liverpool (2015-18)

Liverpool confirmed his signing on a five-year contract, with former club Crystal Palace receiving a sell-on.

Clyne scored his first Liverpool goal against AFC Bournemouth in the fourth round of the League Cup in October 2015 – Jurgen Klopp’s first win as manager of the Merseysiders.

He played the full 90 minutes in the final of the Europa League when Liverpool went down to Sevilla in Basel in May 2016.

Clyne suffered a back injury in the lead up to the start of the 2017-18 campaign, which ruled him out until he made his long-awaited return in the Merseyside derby at Everton in April 2018.

Internationals

Capped by England at under-19 and under-21 level, Clyne made his senior debut in a 3-1 victory over Slovenia at Wembley in November 2014.

Clyne went on to establish himself as first-choice right-back for England and appeared in five of their last six European Championship qualifiers. He has 14 full caps.
