Howe on ruthlessness, defensive work and Lerma display

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was pleased not only with the Cherries' ruthless attacking display at Watford but also the defensive side of things after the win at Vicarage Road.

Three first-half goals saw David Brooks and Joshua King get two, before Callum Wilson added a fourth as his side also kept a clean sheet with a solid defensive display.

Here's what the manager told the written press in his post-match press conference immediately after the game...

ON THE RESULT

It's a great result for us and we're delighted with that.

I would say that we have played better than that, but we're certainly very pleased with that result and our position off the back of it.

Both centre halves were dominant and Jefferson Lerma did a good defensive job in front of them, I'm really pleased with their work.

We were very good in both boxes today, which was a flip from our last away game at Burnley, it was an incisive, efficient performance and we dealt with the physical contest really well.

ON KEEPING COOL DESPITE THE SCORE

With the atmosphere it could have been easy for us to lose control and make the numbers on the pitch level again. To keep the discipline like we did against Palace, is very very important.

We weren't totally dominant either so we had to be clever, nothing is a given in this league.

ON JOSHUA KING'S BRACE

I'm really pleased for Joshua for getting his double. The one in open play naturally pleases me more, it was a really good header.

He's such an important player for us, it was a great ball by Callum for the header but he still has plenty to do - we're pleased with him today.

Well, I've just quickly seen the first yellow card and it looked nasty, a dangerous one for Asmir but I'm not sure where it caught it him.

It could have been a red card in itself but two yellows is probably the right call.

ON A POTENTIAL TOP HALF FINISH

Well wins obviously give you the confidence and belief you need to win really difficult games in the Premier League.

There's tough games to come, we need those mental qualities showed today to push on and get more results.

Nothing is a given in this league, we will enjoy where we are but we have to maximise this period.
