The Cherries fell behind when Michal Helik pounced from a visiting set-piece routine, though broke back instantly with Arnaut Danjuma finishing a blistering counter attack to level the scoreline.
Dominic Solanke edged Bournemouth in front before half time but it was level again following the restart when Dominik Frieser equalised.
A late header from Carlton Morris completed the comeback for Barnsley, who returned to South Yorkshire with all three points.
