Former Cherries star Danny Ings drew first blood for the Saints when he netted his 21st goal of the season four minutes before half-time.
Ings then saw his second-half penalty superbly saved by Cherries goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after Harry Wilson had been judged to have handled following a VAR review.
Although the hosts created a number of presentable goalscoring chances, they could not find a way past Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and a well-drilled visiting defence.
And although substitute Sam Surridge appeared to have grabbed a dramatic late goal, his effort was ruled out following a VAR review deep in added time before Che Adams scored a second for the visitors.
