First-half strikes set the home side on the way, David Silva and Gabriel Jesus scoring, though sandwiched in between was a Junior Stanislas freekick which Ederson pushed onto the post and somehow kept out.
Bournemouth created chances throughout and took one in the closing stages when substitutes Callum Wilson and David Brooks combined for the latter to slot home.
Further openings followed, but the Cherries fell just short of claiming what would have been a well-deserved point at the Etihad.
