Five point preview: Chelsea

Chelsea players celebrate after a recent goal against Watford.

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth face champions Chelsea in what promises to be another exciting contest under the lights at Vitality Stadium.

Antonio Conte's men head into the game looking to secure their third consecutive win, but what should we look out for?

Here are five important points ahead of the fixture to keep an eye on.

Fresh starters

Chelsea were able to give a full rest to David Luiz, Eden Hazard, Marcos Alonso, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesar Azpilicueta for the Wednesday night Carabao Cup tie against Everton.

They’re all likely to return on Saturday, but there could be changes as the champions look to their Tuesday night Champions League tie away to Roma.

Competition to replace Kante

N’Golo Kante is absent for Chelsea, and Antonio Conte himself admitted it’s an ‘impossible’ task to replace him.

Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko have been the combination Conte has used in recent weeks due to injuries in that position.

But on Wednesday night against Everton, Danny Drinkwater returned from injury and youngster Ethan Ampadu also impressed in the heart of the team.

Drinkwater’s defensive nature could benefit Chelsea and we could see a change in the middle of the park.

Pedro factor

Winger Pedro has consistently proven his worth for the Blues across the year.

The diminutive Spanish winger heads into the game in top form, having scored a stunning goal against Watford last week.

The former Barcelona man has been directly involved in more goals for Chelsea in all competitions in 2017 than any other player – he’s been involved in 21 goals, with nine assists in total.

Away form

If the table was done on only away games, Chelsea would be sitting comfortably in 4th place – no different to where they are now.

Their form away from Stamford Bridge was flawless up until their recent defeat to Crystal Palace.

Prior to their 2-1 loss to their London rivals, Chelsea had beaten Spurs at Wembley, Leicester at the King Power Stadium and romped to a 4-0 victory over Stoke City at bet365 Stadium.

They haven’t lost successive Premier League away games since November 2015, when under the management of Jose Mourinho.

Will Batshuayi start?

Belgian frontman Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to devastating effect against Watford last week.

He scored twice, meaning that since the start of last season, only Olivier Giroud (seven) has scored more goals as a substitute in the Premier League than the Chelsea man (five).

He played 85 minutes of the 2-1 win over Everton in midweek, with Alvaro Morata replacing him for the last five minutes.
