AFC Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
The 24-year-old was substituted in the 75th minute of Saturday’s draw against Preston North End at Deepdale.
Cook was assessed and scanned by the club’s medical staff, which confirmed a rupture to the anterior cruciate ligament in the midfielder’s right knee – the same knee he suffered a similar injury to in December 2018.
The club are now seeking specialist advice regarding the next steps for Cook, and he will be out of action for a number of months, bringing a premature end to what has been an impressive 2020/21 campaign.
“We are devastated for Lewis, who has been such a key part of the team this season,” said AFC Bournemouth head coach Jonathan Woodgate.
“He is still a young player with a long career ahead of him, and we will provide the best rehabilitation, treatment and support to ensure he comes back stronger than ever.
“Lewis has experienced this before so he knows exactly what it takes to return from this injury. That doesn’t make it any easier but he is mentally strong and will have the support and love of everyone at the club every step of the way.”
