England international midfielder Lewis Cook has signed a new four-year contract with AFC Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at Vitality Stadium until the summer of 2022.

Cook joined AFC Bournemouth from Leeds United in the summer of 2016 and has gone on to establish himself as a key part of the Cherries’ side, making 41 appearances in all competitions to date.

The York-born midfielder is currently on standby for England’s 2018 FIFA World Cup squad, having won his first senior Three Lions cap in March against Italy.

Last summer, Cook became the first England captain since Bobby Moore to lift the World Cup as England Under-20s triumphed in South Korea.

“This new contract is a really proud moment for me and the icing on the cake for the year we’ve had and all the hard work that’s gone on behind the scenes at the club,” said Cook.

“It came as a nice surprise. I was just concentrating on my football and playing games, but when it was spoken about I couldn’t wait to get it signed.

“I’m really enjoying my football here and I’m looking forward to the future with AFC Bournemouth.”

AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said: “It was important that we get our talented, young players to commit to the future of the club and this is a really important signing for us to make.

“Lewis has had an outstanding campaign, highlighted by his recognition with the England team and his place on standby for the World Cup squad.

“His immediate future is now with us and we can really concentrate on next season.

“This is an exciting stage of Lewis’ career, which is heading in the right direction, and I am delighted that will happen at AFC Bournemouth.”

AFC Bournemouth chief executive, Neill Blake, added: “I am delighted that Lewis has signed a new contract.

“He is an integral part of our squad and what we are trying to achieve here, both in terms of the present and the future of the club.

“We pride ourselves on developing young, homegrown talent and Lewis is a perfect example of that.

“We have given him a platform to perform at the highest level and his recent step-up to the senior England squad proves that we have an outstanding player on our hands who will continue to flourish here.”

He has had an outstanding campaign, highlighted by recognition with the England team.
